Christopher Raj has been in the hotel industry for more than 33 years. He initially oversaw all aspects of human resource operation until 2006 when the demanding expertise in the area of industrial relations in the Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts Group, of which he is the Area Director of Human Resources-Industrial Relations, steered him to focus solely on industrial relations. Christopher currently oversees industrial relation operations of nine hotels and resorts in Malaysia.
During his tenure with the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, the hotel’s human resources department has won numerous awards. Among them: the Prime Minister’s Quality Award (1997), Best Human Resources Department in the hotel industry – by Hospitality Asia (2004), Human Resources Minister’s Award for contribution in developing human resources by the Human Resources Development Centre (2004), Best Human Resources Team in the Shangri-La Group beating 47 other contestants in the Group (2004) and the National Human Resources Excellence Award by the Malaysian Institute of Human Resources (2005).
In addition to the above industry accolades, Kuala Lumpur-born Christopher is also the president of the Association of Hotel Employers (AHE), board member of the MEF (Malaysian Employers Federation) Academy, member of the National Labour Advisory Council, member of the HRDF Council (alternate), member of Hospitality Panel of the National Productivity Council (NPC) and advisory panel member of Taylor’s University.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of human resource management and industrial relations, Christopher was awarded the badge of “Officer of the Order of the Defender of the Realm” or KMN (Kesatria Mangku Negara) by the Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia) on His Majesty’s birthday in 2015.
He has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, botany and zoology and a post- graduate diploma in human resources management and industrial relations from Bangalore University.
Christopher is married to his lovely wife Molly and they have two grown-up children – Deborah and Noel.
